American scientists from Southern Illinois University have found an alternative to completely banning university students from using smartphones while studying. Short breaks where students can check their devices have been found to help them focus better in class. The study was published in the scientific journal magazine Frontiers in Education (FIE).
During the academic period, experts experimentally evaluated the effectiveness of such technological breaks, lasting one, two or four minutes, respectively.
During the study, the researchers also implemented two-week periods during which students were completely prohibited from using or even touching their phones during class. The results showed that one-minute process breaks were the most effective solution.
Experts also found that students’ average test scores were highest in classrooms with one-minute breaks. According to the scientists, students were less distracted, allowing them to focus on the material and earn more points.
