Archaeologists have found a Roman military camp in Switzerland, built in the 1st century BC. The remains of the fortifications of the legionnaires of the Roman Empire are located at an altitude of 2200 meters in the Swiss Alps, near the Italian border. Information about the opening was published on the official website website The canton of Grisons in Switzerland.
As a study using laser radars showed, the camp was protected by three moats and a defensive wall.
Up until this point, scholars only knew about the battlefield, located about 900 meters below the city walls.
Experts determined that the camp was in a “strategically advantageous position” and that the site offered fine views of the surrounding valleys below, but the legionnaires had to cross many mountain passes to reach their fortifications.
Further exploration of the site revealed many Roman artifacts, including various weapons and shoe nails.
As analysis of the finds showed, the slingshots contained traces of the third legion of the imperial army, which participated in the battle not far from the camp.
Earlier scientists discovered The site of the battle between the rebel Spartacus and the Roman army.
