German microbiologists from the University of Jena have found a prokaryotic bacterium that can feed on other cells. The existence of such an organism was previously thought to be impossible and contrary to modern teachings. The study was published in the scientific journal magazine mBio.
Prokaryotes are the oldest single-celled living organisms on Earth that do not have a built-in internal nucleus or other internal organelles. The absence of a distinct nucleus distinguishes them from eukaryotes, which encompass all living organisms with a nuclear cell structure.
A distinctive feature of eukaryotes is endocytosis – the ability to eat other cells. Until recently, scientists believed that prokaryotes were unable to eat any of their own species because they did not have an energy source in the form of mitochondria for such a complex action.
In the new study, the team focused on the prokaryotic group Planctomycetes: unusual bacteria that could be potential ancestors of eukaryotes because of their unusual biology.
Scientists have discovered a microorganism called Uabimicrobium helgolandensis living in the North Sea. This prokaryote can feed on other bacteria, disproving previous scientific ideas.
According to scientists, this discovery will provide new insight into the evolution of multicellular life on our planet.
Previous researchers I learnedthat global warming could lead to an invasion of prokaryotes in the world’s oceans.
