An unpleasant burning sensation behind the breastbone – heartburn – can be suppressed without medication. This can be done by changing the diet, raising the head of the bed, chewing sugar-free gum and avoiding tight clothing, gastroenterologist Evgeniy Belousov from Meditsina JSC (Academician Roitberg Clinic) told socialbites.ca.
Heartburn occurs when stomach acid enters the esophagus and irritates its walls. This feeling can occur after eating, especially if you overeat or abuse spicy, fatty, fried, smoked or sour foods.
“First of all, avoid foods that can cause heartburn. Include more vegetables, lean meats, whole grain breads and unprocessed grains in your menu. Eat small meals and do not overeat. Second, raise the head of the bed. Heartburn often occurs at night; try sleeping with the head of the bed elevated. This will help prevent stomach acid from entering the esophagus,” the doctor explained.
Third, the doctor recommends chewing sugarless gum. Chewing stimulates the production of saliva, which helps neutralize acid. Fourth, it is important to avoid tight clothing, which puts pressure on the stomach and thus facilitates the entry of acidic stomach contents into the esophagus.
“Heartburn is an unpleasant but usually self-limiting phenomenon. If it bothers you constantly, you should definitely see a doctor. A specialist will help identify the causes of heartburn and provide effective treatment,” the doctor concluded.
