An international team of scientists, including MIPT staff, conducted a comprehensive assessment of the global burden of appendicitis in 204 countries from 1990 to 2021. It turned out that the highest incidence occurs at the beginning and end of life, MIPT told socialbites.ca.
Acute appendicitis is a rapidly developing inflammation of the vermiform appendix (appendix) of the cecum. The appendix is located in the lower abdomen, on the right side, and its inflammation is characterized by acute pain in this area. This is one of the most common diseases that are treated surgically. According to MIPT experts, about 17 million people suffer from it every year. The rate of the disease in Russia has not changed significantly over the years. In 1990, their number was 286,000, and in 2021 – 265,000.
Traditionally, appendicitis is a disease of young people: the highest incidence occurs in the second and third decades of a person’s life. However, in countries with high life expectancy, the disease burden is greater in patients over 80 years of age. In countries with low life expectancy, children under the age of ten are affected. According to scientists, in these countries, a small proportion of the population survives until the second peak of the incidence.
At the same time, the probability of death and disability in elderly patients is significantly higher than in younger patients, who can tolerate the disease relatively more easily if they receive timely medical care.
Formerly a doctor listed Tests that men over 35 need every year.
