The embalming of the body of Vladimir Ilyich Lenin took doctors about four months, told socialbites.ca Dr. Valery Novoselov, a researcher on the history of Russian medicine, who previously published a book based on the archives of the “medical diary. History of VI Ulyanov” from the Lenin Foundation RGASPI.
At first, they planned to bury the leader on January 27, 1924, six days after Lenin’s death. However, the farewell procession lasted too long, so it was decided to embalm the leader so that everyone could say goodbye to him.
“Lenin was buried in a crypt (this is what is called a mausoleum today), but the farewell process dragged on and then dragged on so much that by spring signs of decomposition still appeared on the body. This eventually led to the decision of two scientists to start embalming the body for long-term preservation: pathologist Vorobiev and biochemist Zbarsky, whose work lasted four months,” Novoselov explained.
However, to delay the decay process, the leader’s body was first subjected to primary mummification.
“During the procedure, the doctor took all the blood and organs, after which the body was filled with a standard composition for embalming the deceased, which was supposed to be preserved for a relatively short time, for example, a few days before burial. The solution, consisting of glycerin, alcohol and formaldehyde, is used to delay the process of decay and preserve the appearance of the deceased. But for longer preservation of the dead, especially the body of the leader and creator of a new state, this method, of course, was not suitable,” Novoselov said.
According to him, the commission for organizing Lenin’s funeral, where they discussed the issue of long-term preservation of the leader’s appearance, met on January 23. At the meeting, they discussed the question of how long the leader’s body could be kept in this state so that everyone and many could say goodbye to Lenin.
Later, in order to avoid any negative influence from outside, it was forbidden to remove the death masks from Lenin’s face and in general to touch his face in any way, to put flowers near his face. All this could harm the appearance of the leader. Only after this, scientists began the complete mummification of Lenin, which lasted four months.
