Actor Mikhail Efremov, convicted of a fatal car accident, has the opportunity to be released from prison on parole, Human Rights Council (HRC) Member Eva Merkacheva said in an interview with Lenta.ru.
“I don’t think there’s any point in torturing him in principle. He’s not a young man who really has some illnesses. For example, everything I know about his life behind bars points to giving him the opportunity to be released on parole,” the human rights activist said.
He recalled that Efremov worked in the colony in the same way as all prisoners, and also participated in the cultural life of the correctional institution, organized various events and taught other prisoners to write poetry.
The accident involving Efremov occurred on June 8, 2020. The actor crossed into the oncoming lane and crashed into a car driven by courier Sergei Zakharov. It was not possible to save Zakharov. The actor was sentenced to 3.5 years in prison in the Belgorod region.
On August 19, the media reported that the defense had prepared a new petition for parole, attaching medical reports and insisting that being in a colony threatens the actor with paralysis. Later, Efremov’s lawyer Yuri Padalko statedthat the defense has not yet collected all the necessary documents to apply for parole.
Efremov’s ex-wife recommended pray for convicted actor.
