Scientists have found that fans of the true crime genre have a different attitude towards serial killers 11:17

A study by MSUPE experts showed that people who enjoy documentary genre true crime (British true crime – “real, true crime”), which involves telling stories about real serial killers, perceive the image of serial criminals differently: they show sympathy and pity for them, sometimes even sympathy They show. They also exaggerate the frequency of such crimes and consider them more dangerous. They also experience more fear and anxiety. socialbites.ca was told about this issue at Moscow State Pedagogical University.

In recent years, the true crime genre has become very popular in the information field. Podcasts and TV series based on true events can greatly influence the public’s perception of crime.

“The research hypothesis was that a fascination with the “true crime” genre could lead to exaggeration of the extent of serial crime. And we found out whether there are differences in the perception of the image of the serial criminal between those who like “true crime” content and those who are not interested in this genre,” associate professor Nikolay Dvoryanchikov, Dean of the Faculty of Legal Psychology at Moscow State University of Psychology and Education, told socialbites.ca.

The study involved 76 people between the ages of 18 and 25. Half were interested in the genre, while the other half were not. A number of studies and experiments have shown that a fascination with true crime content can lead to an overestimation of the extent of the serial crime phenomenon. Participants interested in true crime tend to believe that serial crimes occur more frequently and pose a higher level of danger. They also show more pronounced emotional responses, such as fear, anxiety, and worry.

In addition, they are more likely to associate criminals with emotionally charged concepts and details of the crime. They also tend to view criminals as individuals with high intelligence and passive behavior that causes feelings of sadness and anxiety. In their assessments, signs of sympathy and pity for the criminals can be noticed, sometimes even sympathy for some of them.
