Canadian scientists from Dalhousie University have identified personality traits that influence people’s likelihood of cheating in a relationship or marriage. The research was published in the scientific journal broadcasting Journal of Sexual Medicine (JSM).
In the new study, experts analyzed previous research and identified a number of signs. Some of these are related to individuals’ individual personality traits (e.g. narcissism), while others are related to relationships (attachment type). It is also necessary to take into account the context, that is, the possibility of an act of treason.
According to scientists, people with low conscientiousness are more likely to be unfaithful. This spills over into other aspects of life as inattention, disorganization, lack of focus, and problems with persistence.
It also turns out that men with low levels of agreeableness and high levels of extraversion are prone to cheating. The factor of infidelity in women is frequent neuroses and manifestations of dark personality traits – narcissism, tendency to manipulate and lack of empathy.
In addition, women with an anxious attachment type are more likely to be unfaithful, while an avoidant attachment type, on the contrary, reduces the risk of infidelity.
The study authors emphasized that predicting infidelity is often difficult because it requires consideration of satisfaction with relationships and intimate life, commitment, and many other characteristics.
