Apple explained why older iPhone models and the Vision Pro mixed reality headset will not receive Apple Intelligence AI support. In this respect reports WCCF Technology portal.
During WWDC 2024, it was announced that Apple Intelligence features will only be available on iPhone 15 Pro, iPad and Mac devices using Apple’s proprietary M1 chips and later. It is stated that the neural processor (NPU unit) in the Apple M1 is comparable to the NPU in the Apple A14 used in the iPhone 12 in terms of performance.
However, as Apple itself has clarified, the M2-based Vision Pro does not support Apple Intelligence because the headset’s NPU is already busy with AI tasks such as object and gesture recognition and does not have free processing power for other tasks.
A similar situation occurs with older iPhone models. While their NPUs are similar in power to the unit in the Apple M1, in laptops and tablets these units are less demanding than in smartphones. Additionally, older iPhones have less than 8GB of RAM, which impacts support for new features.
Apple Intelligence support will appear on the iPhone 15 Pro and other company devices in late 2024. Moreover, some artificial intelligence functions will appear next year.
