Second feature film Noah Pritzker (“Leavers”) ‘Ex-husbands’There are some American independent cinemas from another era. A comedy from another time, far from the issues of the moment and not at all obsessed with the current situation. And by this escape from both thematic and aesthetic tendencies (it’s nice to watch a comedy without a platform gaze), Pritzker’s film becomes stronger, more unusual, and more compelling. Griffin Dunne He plays the hero, a 60-year-old father of a family who has to face many unexpected setbacks, including the abandonment of his wife (Rosanna Arquette) After more than 30 years of marriage and the separation of their two adult children (Miles Heizer and James Norton). Using the idea of journey/meeting as a starting point, ‘Exhusbands’ describes the crises experienced by these characters with as much naturalness as elegance and optimism.
Maybe the story isn’t terribly original, but there are a few things that take Pritzker’s movie from an unsentimental place to a very welcome and exciting proposition. These are the clear writing of the characters and their relationships (at the beginning of the film, during the pause) and the author’s clear knowledge of comedy. This can be seen in the way he perceives situations and, above all, in the deep respect he shows to different generations of comedy actors. Seeing Griffin Dunne and Rosanna Arquette together after 40 years was ‘Ho, what a night!’ (1985) is a plus.
