Ancient dolmens were not originally designed for burial; rather they served as religious structures to store and communicate with the spirits of ancestors. The magazine writes that this hypothesis was put forward by researcher Alexander Dmitriev from Novorossiysk “Homeland”.
He noted that it was impossible to penetrate the dolmens through holes less than 35 cm in diameter.
A report on the possible cult function of Caucasian dolmens was presented at the International Scientific Conference XXXIII Krupnov Readings. Dmitriev emphasized that using the term “dolmen culture” is not entirely correct, as it could be misleading about the purposes for which these structures were built in ancient times.
The researcher concluded that dolmens were not burial places, but places of worship and communication with ancestors. He noted that dolmens were erected in the Chalcolithic period and were destroyed long before the 4th millennium BC. This theory complements the popular hypothesis about the funerary function of dolmens.
Dmitriev also noted that the diameter of most of the holes in the dolmens is less than 35 cm, which indicates that the main purpose of the construction of these structures was not penetration. Research conducted in recent years shows that those who built dolmens probably did not use them as graves, and that this practice emerged later when dolmens began to be used for funeral ceremonies.
