Scientists from Queen’s University in Canada found that obesity is a risk factor for stillbirth, and this likelihood increases in later stages. Research results published In CMAJ (Canadian Medical Association Journal).
During the study, researchers analyzed records of 681,178 births that occurred in Canada (Ontario) between 2012 and 2018. After adjusting for some risk factors for stillbirth, such as diabetes and high blood pressure, the researchers found that women with stage 1 obesity (BMI, body mass index 30-34.9) had twice the risk of stillbirth at 39 weeks’ gestation compared to other women . , those with normal BMI (18.5-24.9).
BMI (body mass index) is a value that is the ratio of a person’s body weight to their height, measured in kilograms per square meter.
The risk of stillbirth at the 36th week in pregnant women with second and third degree obesity (BMI 35-39.9 and over 40, respectively) was 2-2.5 times higher than in women with normal BMI. Scientists also found that this probability increases even more (more than fourfold) by 40 weeks.
Scientists hope that the results of their study will contribute to the development and implementation of an individual approach to prenatal counseling for obese patients.
Previous scientists defined Association between exposure to high temperatures and preterm birth.
