Scientists from Amsterdam Public Health Center and the University of Glasgow found that loneliness can cause depression, dementia and senile asthenia in older people. Research results published In The Lancet.
The scientific study is a meta-analysis of previous studies on the impact of loneliness on human health. Collectively, scientists analyzed more than 130 studies. The results showed that lack of regular communication leads to increased physical weakness (asthenia) in the elderly. Most likely this is because there is no need to make an effort to attend any events or meet up with friends and family.
Muscle weakness and inability to tolerate physical activity may also increase the risk of falls in older adults. It is stated that in some cases, physical frailty can lead to loss of social contacts due to reduced mobility.
Scientists also found that older people who live alone have a higher risk of developing dementia and depression. This may be due to chronically high levels of inflammation in the body due to minimal lack of physical activity and constant sitting.
Researchers explained that impairments in social, mental, and physical functioning often occur simultaneously. However, the negative effects of loneliness on health can be partially reversed by increasing the time spent socially or with loved ones.
Psychologists before named An important indicator of loneliness and avoidance of relationships.
