There is not enough evidence that melatonin supplementation can help children with insomnia. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) spoke on this subject Health Day.
A new AASM survey found that 46% of parents give melatonin to children under 13. About 30% gave melatonin to teenagers.
The academy says parents should consult a doctor before giving their children melatonin or any other supplement.
Non-drug drugs are especially dangerous: the melatonin content in them may be much higher than stated. In one study, researchers found that the amount of melatonin may be two to four times higher than stated on the label. Some supplements also contained other chemicals that required a doctor’s prescription.
AASM Public Safety Committee Chairman Dr. “Since many of the sleep problems experienced by children can be improved with behavioral changes, parents should help their children establish a consistent sleep routine and practice good sleep hygiene before switching to melatonin,” said M. Adil. Rishi.
Good sleep habits include having a consistent sleep schedule, meaning going to bed and waking up at the same time every day, including weekends. You should also encourage your child to disconnect from all devices at least 30 minutes before bed. Taking a warm bath or shower, journaling, or reading can all be habits that will help you relax and prepare yourself for sleep.
