Scientists from Harvard University (HU) found that high blood pressure while lying down is associated with an increased risk of heart attack and stroke, as well as life-threatening risks. The research will be presented at: scientific session American Heart Association on Hypertension in 2023.
The autonomic nervous system regulates blood pressure when changing body position. Gravity can cause blood to pool in certain areas of the body when sitting or standing, so sometimes the body cannot regulate blood pressure properly.
In the new study, scientists analyzed medical data from 11,369 adults from the ARIC study. The first group was examined between 1987 and 1989. Participants were followed for an average of 25-28 years until the fifth visit in 2011-2013.
Compared with participants without high blood pressure while sitting or lying down, those with blood pressure of 130/80 mmHg. when sitting and lying in a position or higher, the risk of developing coronary heart disease was 1.6 times higher, heart failure – 1.83 times; stroke – 1.86 times higher.
It was also observed that the risk increased in participants with normal sitting pressure and high lying pressure.
Differences in blood pressure medication use did not affect these increased risks in either group.
“Our results suggest that people with known risk factors for cardiovascular disease and stroke may benefit from measuring blood pressure while lying on their back,” the scientists said.
The research focused on middle-aged adults. This means that the results may not be generalizable to older adults.
