Recently, Roscosmos announced the recruitment of new candidates for the cosmonaut corps. It will take about 6 years to prepare them, as Sergey Krikalev, general manager of Roskosmos, told socialbites.ca.
“It depends on the individual abilities of the incoming astronauts and the schedule. When 10 years passed before joining the detachment as a candidate, there were options, even to flying for more. There were people who had been in the detachment for several years and did not fly for various reasons. Someone for medical reasons, someone for not mastering the program. But the guys from the previous recruitment in 2018 have already approached the job as part of the crew,” said the expert.
According to Krikalev, in Gagarin’s time, a little over a year had passed since the cosmonauts joined the detachment in flight, the training itself was much shorter. Now the technique has become more complex and the tasks have increased even more.
“So the preparation for both us and the Americans is divided into several phases. The first is the general space training phase, lasting two years. After that, the preparatory phase begins in the group, where the astronaut already examines a particular spacecraft, the station in the configuration in which he is currently flying, and passes the knowledge exams for these systems. This is already a detailed knowledge of systems capable of interoperability with possible failures and an understanding of how to troubleshoot these failures. At this stage, you have to pass nearly one hundred exams. And the next stage is already training as part of the crew. “Now this takes about a year and a half,” explained Krikalev.
According to Krikalev, it takes about 2-3 years to pass one hundred exams. So the total training period is about 6 years or more.
