“Now the guards are always on duty”: how the school of Kazan has changed a year after the shooting

On May 11, 2021, 19-year-old Ilnaz Galyaviyev, armed with an automatic shotgun, went to gymnasium 175 in Kazan, which he graduated from four years before the attack.

He set up a Telegram channel called “God” at 08:57 20 minutes before the shoot. There he posted a message: “Today I’m going to kill a large amount of bio-trash and shoot myself.” Then Galyaviev set fire to his apartment and went to school.

Galyaviev was dressed completely in black and carried a gun on his shoulder – several people saw him along the way, even waved to someone, but, not suspecting the danger, eyewitnesses passed and did not call the police. Freely entering the territory of the gymnasium, the attacker shot at a walking girl, and then broke into the educational institution – this was at 09.19.

Mullanur Mustafin, an integrated maintenance worker, was the first to intercept him. He heard the gunshots and went outside to see what had happened.

“I thought he was shooting dogs. I wanted to warn him. And in the end he himself came under fire,” said the employee.

The first bullet hit the man’s stomach and the second bullet hit his head. The fact that the bullet went over a tangent and bounced off the concrete floor like a ricochet saved him. Meanwhile, the female guard managed to press the alarm button. The man was on the ground covered in blood.

Thinking that Mustafin was dead, Galyaviev went even further. He shot a teacher on the ground floor and detonated a homemade explosive at the locked door of his elementary school office.

Climbing to the ground, he opened the door to the classroom where 8 “A” students were hiding at that moment. While Galyaviev was climbing the stairs, the headmaster ordered all the teachers to close the classroom doors over the loudspeaker. A teacher and two schoolchildren were in the path of the shooter – they were killed.

In an open classroom, a young man started shooting indiscriminately at children, aiming at their heads. In the hallway, Galyaviev killed another teacher. He then fired several shots through the window towards the stadium where the lesson was held, returned to the classroom and continued shooting at children who had jumped out of the window to escape.

The execution at Gym 175 lasted exactly 10 minutes. When Galyaviev ran out of ammunition, his hands came out in the air and he surrendered to the police and riot police. As a result of the gunfire, nine people (seven students and two teachers) were killed and 23 people were injured.

declared in mind

After being arrested, the “Boiler hitman” behaved inappropriately and aggressively: in the video taken during the interrogation, Galyaviev screamed and cursed. It turns out that the thought of killing people haunted the teenager for a year.

“About two months ago, I didn’t immediately realize myself as a god. And in the summer, a monster especially began to awaken in me. I started to hate everyone. I’ve always hated everybody, and I’m starting to hate it more. Don’t you dare attribute any psychic or psychological bullshit to me. “I’m not the people you attribute your subjective opinion to,” he said.

Galyaviev was arrested the same day – he admitted that he was guilty of the crime. Criminal cases were brought against him for items such as “Murder”, “Illegal bomb construction”, “Storage and transportation of explosives” and “Deliberate destruction or damage to property”.

In the examination, it was determined that the young man had obtained the gun legally. She received a certificate and then a license from a psychiatrist and narcologist.

The first forensic psychological examination recognized the shooter as insane, but the second conclusion refuted it – during the first study, experts did not take into account the “effect of the destructive subculture on Galyaviev,” as noted in England. He faces a life sentence for the “Boiler hitman” being considered sane.

Just six months after the tragedy, Galyaviev expressed his regret. He explained that he acted alone and had no agitators. The young man also assured that he had never been a member of a cult.

At the same time, Galyaviev made a reservation that many things could stop him, without stating the gist of what was said. He apologized to the relatives of the dead and injured and noted that it would not be possible to bring them back, even though he repented to the relatives of the victims.

On May 5, 2022, the Supreme Court of Tatarstan extended Galyaviev’s detention in a pre-trial detention center. He will be held in custody until August 11. During the meeting, the defendants did not object to the extension of the detention period.

In addition to Ilnaz Galyaviev, three more people are charged in the case – two employees of commercial firms responsible for the security system at the school, and Amina Valeeva, the director of the gym – indicted under the article “Negligence due to negligence”. in the event of the death of two or more persons as a result of negligence.”

According to investigators, due to the fault of the principal, the school lacked professional security, and in one of the classrooms the loudspeaker did not work well, which sounded a warning about an emergency. He is under house arrest, the woman pleads not guilty. The parents of gymnasium No. 175 students filed an official appeal to Russian President Vladimir Putin and ICR President Alexander Bastrykin with a request to release Valeeva from criminal liability.

What has changed in school safety?

After shooting, the gym was closed for repairs – the building that opened was nothing like what it had been on the day of the tragedy: a new facade color, glass doors, an indoor pool in the backyard, a new library and other modern solutions and innovations.

One of the most important changes was a strict security system, the mother of sophomore Evgenia told socialbites.ca. It is now almost impossible for foreigners to enter the area.

“Entry is strictly by magnetic card. Security at school is now always on duty – no one can enter without their knowledge. “When strangers want to enter the area, the guard goes to the door and decides for himself whether the person can enter or not,” he said.

According to Evgenia, psychologists work at the educational institution for a comfortable stay of children who are still in a stressful situation due to shooting memories.

“There is even a separate room where schoolchildren can come and chat with psychologists or just play. There are theme days almost every day during the school year. This allowed the children to quickly move away from the tragic events and become interested in school, ”the schoolgirl’s mother emphasized.

The only thing that scares children is periodic evictions. It either happens according to regulations or clarifies in case of false mining reports.

“My daughter feels much better, but so far she is still worried. Especially if there is an eviction, she is very worried. Such events can happen 5-6 times in an academic year. She periodically remembers that day, afraid that it could happen again, ”Added Evgenia.

Actions of the authorities

During the year since the tragedy in the Kazan gymnasium No. 175, the governments of Russia and the Republic of Tatarstan carefully analyzed the causes of the incident, developed new security measures, Irina Volynets, the Commissar for the Rights of the Child of the Republic of Tatarstan and its founder, from the National Committee of Parents, told socialbites.ca in the statement.

“For 2021-2022 in Kazan, about 1.8 billion rubles have been allocated to ensure the safety of schools, kindergartens and other educational facilities. New equipment installed in schools was recommended and approved by the Tatarstan National Guard. After the tragedy, many institutions were equipped with modernized fire and burglar alarms with metal frames, panic buttons, CCTV cameras, emergency warning mechanism. The Ombudsman stated that an enhanced access regime has been set up.

Also, according to Volynets, a measure was introduced for the development of psychological and mediation services in schools, ways to reduce the level of anxiety and aggression of schoolchildren. Including involving children in meaningful leisure activities, motivating parents to develop their upbringing skills, creating conditions for trusting communication between children and teachers at school. Recommendations for organizing actions in crisis situations and emergencies have also been developed.

These measures are aimed not only at strengthening security measures in educational institutions, but also at explanatory, preventive work with teachers, children and their parents.

Tragedies in the gymnasium No. 175 in Kazan, where Ilnaz Galyaviev shot 9 people and detonated a bomb, every year on May 11th. Galyaviev, who is described as sane, has been detained since the day of the attack and his detention was last extended for another three months in early May. He is facing life in prison. Big changes have occurred in the gym throughout the year: there were more guards and magnetic locks on the door, and the mother of one of the female students said that the psychologist’s office at the school is always available to students. The district’s children’s ombudsman added that the authorities have equipped all schools in Kazan with new safety equipment – 1.8 billion rubles have been allocated for this.
