Russian scientists have proposed using waste from the energy and chemical industries to clean water from oil. This was reported by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation.
“Based on chemical water treatment sludge, we have obtained a ready-made sorption material that can clean water and other surfaces from oil spills. We carried out hydrophobization of the sludge to increase the sludge absorption capacity and to increase the “wetting” of petroleum products. In addition, a by-product was also used as a water repellant – the waste of chemical enterprises formed during the destruction of siloxane rubbers. “We finally got a hydrophobic carbonate sludge that cleans the water surface from oil spills,” said Larisa Nikolaeva, author of the research paper.
Petroleum material collected with this technology can be used as an energy source. Tests have shown that sludge cleaning does not pose a deadly toxic hazard to fish and crustaceans. Based on the results of the tests carried out in the settling pond of Mari Pulp and Paper Mill, the pollutant removal efficiency was estimated to be 99%.
According to the authors, using industrial waste as a clean-up agent would reduce the cost of oil spill cleanup, which would otherwise be very costly for oil companies and the government.
