Planes are in 55% more dangerous turbulence due to climate change 18:24

Climate change has caused an increase in turbulence, which is dangerous for airplanes. Reported by the University of Reading.

The study found that over the North Atlantic, at a typical point where most airways pass, the total annual duration of severe turbulence increased by 55%, from 17.7 hours in 1979 to 27.4 hours in 2020. The duration of medium turbulence increased by 37% from 70.0 hours to 96.1 hours, and the duration of light turbulence increased by 17% from 466.5 hours to 546.8 hours.

According to the authors, this increase is largely due to global warming from anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. Warmer air increases turbulence by increasing flow shear in jet streams.

The scientists conclude that air carriers need to start thinking about how to deal with the increased turbulence, as it costs the industry $150 million to $500 million a year in the U.S. alone. Every additional minute in the turbulence zone not only causes concern and injury to passengers, but also causes intense wear to the airframe.

The USA and the North Atlantic experienced the greatest increase in turbulence, while Europe, the Middle East and the South Atlantic also saw a significant increase in turbulence.
