An international group of scientists from France and Germany discovered an unexpected similarity between the language of chimpanzees and human speech. It turned out that our closest relatives from the world of Fauna could combine the sounds and change their meanings – just like people collect words in sentences. The study was published scientifically magazine Science Developments (SCIADV).
The team recorded thousands of chimpanzees in Tai National Park in Cote-D’ivoire. The analysis revealed that monkeys use 12 species of sound in 16 different combinations and change their value depending on the binding.
“The ability to create new meanings and unite elements is a fundamental feature of human language. Now we see the principles of chimpanzees.
Chimpanzees use sound combinations in three ways. Adding Meaning (for example, “Feeding” + Sound “Rest” = “Nutrition during rest”). Explaining the meaning (sound “travel” + sound “aggression” = “decoration without conflict”). The creation of new meanings (sound “rest” + sound “aides” = “construction”).
Previously, the sounds of the monkeys were believed to have combined with the threat of predators, for example, in narrow situations. However, the new discovery showed that they did this in various contexts from food to social interaction.
The discovery questioned the old theory that the communication of monkeys is limited to emotions and that it is not related to the flexible meaning combination.
