China has built the world’s highest meteorological station on Everest. About informs China Central Television.
At 12:46 local time on Wednesday, the automatic station was located at an altitude of more than 8.8 thousand meters, its equipment weighed about 50 kg, transportation was carried out disassembled. The station will replace a similar device installed on the southern slope of Everest in 2019 by the US-British expedition at an altitude of 8,430 m.
The installation of the new station was carried out by the Tibetan Plateau Research Institute Expedition under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, it consisted of 13 people. In addition to the main task, the scientists collected snow and ice samples and measured their thickness on the mountaintop using ground radar.
In total, the project provided for the deployment of eight such stations on Everest, including those located on the hill. They will collect information about wind speed, direction, air humidity. Last year, four of them were installed: for the seas, they are located at altitudes of 5,200 to 6,500 m.
The placement of weather stations on Everest is important for understanding the impact of global warming on this mountain system.
