Researchers from Australia’s national science body CSIRO have discovered that self-monitoring and using apps to monitor your progress is key to success in long-term weight loss and maintenance. The results of the scientists’ work are presented on the website CSIRO.
The agency launched a 12-week weight loss program that has been completed by more than 6,000 people. The researchers found that 64% of the participants lost a clinically significant amount of weight (more than 5 kg) in one year. The most successful people lost an average of 22 kg, which is 22% of their initial body weight.
The scientists decided to find out how the participants came to such conclusions. To do this, the researchers compared the participants’ weight loss regimens. The analysis revealed the importance of monitoring results (weighing, keeping a food diary, making menu and exercise plans, finding new recipes, etc.) and self-monitoring.
Study participants who lost more than 10% of their initial body weight used all of the above tools 50% more than those who lost less than 5% over the same time period.
“All these tools help people develop positive habits and maintain a healthy lifestyle. When it comes to sustainable weight loss and a healthy lifestyle, there are no quick fixes. The result is achieved through a series of regular actions,” he said.
