Russian scientists created the carbon base of the ionistor from the shell of a pine nut. This was reported by the press service of the Institute of Catalysis of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Capacitors and batteries, the two most popular types of energy storage devices, have opposite properties. Capacitors charge almost instantly and give a charge, but their capacity is small. Batteries and accumulators, on the other hand, can store a lot of energy, but give and receive it at a limited rate. To overcome this problem, scientists have invented supercapacitors, or ionizers, which occupy an intermediate position between batteries and conventional capacitors – charging times are calculated in tens of seconds. Ionistor electrodes are made of activated carbon. It has a high effective surface area and the larger the area, the more energy the device can store.
Now Russian scientists have been able to make this carbon material from the shells of pine nuts harvested on an industrial scale in Russia. “The walnut shell has an increased density that is transferred to a certain degree to the final product. To achieve high energy capacity per unit volume of a supercapacitor, the electrode material must be dense and have a high specific surface area,” explains chemist Pyotr Yeletsky.
To obtain activated carbon, the shell is first crushed and carbonized in a fluidized catalyst bed. Then, the biochar obtained in the first step is mixed with an alkaline solution, processed at 600–1000 °C, washed and dried. The highest surface area obtained with shell coal is 2200 square meters. m per gram. The finished product is formed into flat “pills” and pressed into metal battery cases for testing.
Field tests have shown that the production of activated carbon for ionizers from pine nuts is meaningful and has promise.
