Proportion of Spanish SMEs patenting new technologies doubles the EU average

In the European Union, only one in ten patents typical for the fourth industrial revolution come from a small or medium-sized company. In Spain, the rate doubles: two out of ten applications for innovation protection come from an SME, the third highest in the ranking. This has been proven by a study: European Patent Office (EPO) and European Investment Bank (EIB) observes the period between 2010 and 2018 to analyze the role of companies with less than 250 employees or turnover of less than 50 million Euros in promoting technologies such as: cloud computing, internet of things, 5G networks Hello artificial intelligence.

In this sense, its main conclusion is that technology SMEs in Europe lag behind those in the United States. On this side of the pool, the number of medium and small companies obtaining patents in this field is around 2600, while on the other side more than 6500. If this figure represents 10% of companies patenting such technologies in the European Union, it is 16% in the United States.

Especially in Spain, 154 companies developing advanced digital technologies were identified, placing the State in seventh place within the European Union. Germany (570), France (400) or Italy (273), at the top of the list but surpassing it Denmark (111) or Belgium (106). Additionally, the Spanish figure implies that 19% of such patents come from an SME, a percentage 13 percentage points higher than that of Germany (6%).

“The general lack of specialization in the fourth industrial revolution in Spain is not due to the lack of SMEs operating in this field, but to the lack of large Spanish companies active in this technology,” the reporters said in a statement.

lack of expertise

To this must be added community analysis. “European companies lag behind their international peers and investments in advanced technological innovation are crucial to maintaining Europe’s competitiveness in advanced digital technologies,” said the EIB Vice-President. Ricardo Mourinho Felix. “Small but highly innovative European companies working in these areas can play a decisive role in improving Europe’s competitive position in digital technologies,” says the EPO president, Antonio Campinos.

The report links this distance to the fact that there is less specialization in technologies in the European Union. fourth industrial revolutionA contributing factor to the problems they claim to be facing in the United States, for example lack of qualified talent waves difficulties in accessing finance. And indeed, the recommendations of both organizations are to give more subsidies, promote development policies for start-ups, and promote digital skills and higher education opportunities.
