Doctors at Northwestern Medical Center at Northwestern University treated two patients with end-stage lung cancer with a rare double lung transplant. It has been reported daily mail.
Albert Khoury, 54, received a double lung transplant from Northwestern Medicine in 2021. This made it possible to completely cure a man with lung cancer at the last stage. Now the doctors performed the same operation on Tannaz Amelie, 54, repeating the same success.
According to Northwestern Medicine’s chief of thoracic surgery, a lung transplant isn’t usually an option for patients at this stage. However, their patients were ideal candidates for surgery as they did not metastasize outside of the lung.
Albert Khoury was a non-smoker and worked with cement for the Chicago Transportation Service. In early 2020, complaints of back pain, sneezing, chills and coughing began. The man was diagnosed with stage 1 lung cancer, but was unable to start treatment due to the pandemic. Then, despite several rounds of chemotherapy, her cancer continued to worsen and eventually reached stage 4. Doctors told him he had no chance of survival, but the nurse convinced the man to contact Northwestern Medicine.
A single lung transplant was not the best option, as cancer cells could have passed from the old lung to the new one. Thus, during a seven-hour operation, both lungs were removed and new ones were transplanted, preventing cancer cells from their old lungs from entering the chest cavity or bloodstream. To do this, scientists have developed an innovative surgical technique.
Eighteen months later, the patient still showed no signs of cancer and was able to return to work.
Tannaz Amelie, a retired nurse who is also a non-smoker, started having a severe cough in late 2021. He was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer in January 2022, and doctors recommended that he be transferred to a nursing home to ease the end of his life. She had the same surgery as Albert Khoury, and doctors confirmed she had completely cured the cancer.
