Psychologists at Southwestern University in China have discovered that a lack of quality sleep can disrupt emotion regulation, leading to aggressive behavior. The results of the research have been published magazine biological psychology.
The study involved 450 students who were asked twice about their sleep quality and aggression level. The students also underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to measure their brain activity.
“It turned out that low sleep quality increased students’ hostility. Insufficient sleep can damage interpersonal relationships, so it’s important for people to make a conscious effort to get enough, quality sleep.
Brain imaging data showed that the effect may be due to decreased activity in the prefrontal cortex and increased activity in limbic regions of the brain. This indicates a deficiency in emotional cognition – the ability to accurately interpret the emotions of others – and a violation of the ability to regulate our thoughts and emotions.
