Catalonia starts bankruptcy proceedings in 2021

In the last nine months of the year, the number of bankruptcies increased by 14.17% to 3,618, higher than even recorded at pre-pandemic levels (3,383 in 2019). Economists predict that this number will continue to increase in 2023. However, not all autonomous communities reflect this increase. According to the Bankruptcy Atlas prepared by the General Assembly of Economists, four autonomous communities accumulate 3 out of 4 bankruptcy cases in Spain.

Almost 74% of bankruptcy proceedings in 2021, Catalonia, Community of Madrid, Community of Valencia and Andalusia. In 2021, there are 5,234 in total out of 7,062 events registered on Spanish territory. from them, Catalonia is the country with the highest number of competitions with 2,446 compared to 1,253 held in 2020.. It is followed by the Community of Madrid with a great distance with 1,259 competitions in 2021 compared to 859 the previous year.

There has been an increase in the number of competitions in all autonomous communities throughout 2021, but the reality is that they are increasingly concentrated in specific regions: the threshold of 250 competitions has been exceeded in only the top four autonomous communities and the Basque Country trade creditors. On the other hand, Ceuta and Melilla are regions of Spain with fewer registered bankruptcies (3) followed by La Rioja (17), Cantabria (43), Extremadura (44) and Navarra (53).

If it is broken according to the provinces, the result is similar. Barcelona was the country with the most bankruptcies in 2021 with a total of 2,216, followed by Madrid with 1,259.. At a further distance, Valencia recorded 506, Alicante 304 and Sevilla 215 matches. Once again, the two major cities in Spain concentrated on the competitions held last year. On the other side of the scale, Ceuta and Melilla repeat as provinces with less bankruptcy activity (3)followed by Segovia and Zamora (7), Ávila and Soria (8).

bankruptcies in the world

Britain leads bankruptcies in 2022 With an increase of 37%, but by 2023 growth will drop to just 4%. It is the only European country with positive forecasts for the coming year as the rest of the countries will worsen its numbers due to inflation and energy prices. One of the most affected will be the NetherlandsWith a bankruptcy case growth forecast of 24% in 2022 and 39% in 2023.

reference countries such as France and Germany follow the same negative path: The French country will see a 15% increase in bankruptcy proceedings this year and a 33% increase in 2023, while Germany will experience an increase of 4% in 2022 and 10% next year. Spain is in the intermediate position for both years. With commercial bankruptcy growth forecast of 8% for 2022 and 13% for 2023.

With an eye on both sides of the mapThe US offers worse forecasts in this area compared to China. In the first case, with increases of 8% in 2022 and 23% in the next year, economists expect companies to benefit from the accumulated buffers from the Paycheck Protection Program’s massive transformation in subsidies and profit recovery since the pandemic.

At the same time, China can keep bankruptcy levels under controlAs stated by the General Council of Economists, with forecasts of 1% in 2022 and 11% in 2023. Trade.
