Set a Sim’s Sexual Orientation

Open the Sim settings menu and click on the icon shaped like three green circles in the top left corner of the screen. Here you will see two tabs: Gender and Sexual Orientation. The focus here is the second tab.

You can monitor three parameters:

  • Who the Sim is romantically interested in (Male, Female). Players guide who their neighborhood is ready to start dating, dating, and dating. This is not about sexual activity; that setting appears elsewhere.
  • Does this Sim engage in romantic explorations (yes, no). This controls how the character behaves during adolescence. If you pick Yes, the Sim will be open to relationships with others. If No, invitations for dates or intimacy will be declined.
  • Who the Sim is attracted to and can woo (men, women). This determines who the character will be flirtatious with for teens or interested in romance with adults and older Sims. It does not affect steady partnerships, only special friendships.

As a result, romantic and sexual preferences are now configured separately. A player can choose one, both, or neither option. Choosing both creates a bisexual Sim who is open to relationships with both men and women. If none are selected, the Sim may become asexual and not seek romantic relationships at all.

If these settings are not adjusted, the Sim may shift toward bisexual openness over time, and personal preferences can change after meaningful relationships form. For example, past experiences can influence future attractions.

Gender a Sim

The Sim’s gender characteristics are found in the settings near the sexual orientation options discussed earlier.

The available choices include:

  • Body structure (male, female). The feminine option features a leaner waist and different breast shape, while male characters have broader shoulders and more defined muscles.
  • Clothing preferences (male, female). This setting affects only the default hairstyles and outfits offered, allowing players to dress their Sim however they like.
  • Reproduction options: this Sim can get pregnant, make others pregnant, or neither (infertility). Because pregnancy requires two Sims, one to conceive and another to carry, this option matters for family planning.
  • Toilet use: can this Sim pee standing up (yes, no)? This affects how the character uses the toilet.

Newborn Sims cannot have a defined gender or sexual preference until they reach adolescence. Once they mature, players can customize them in the same way as adults.

Customize pronouns associated with your Sim

The Change Pronoun feature has been added to the character customization menu. Players can choose how their Sim is referred to, such as He, Him, They, or Their. There is also an option to set a custom pronoun set for different situations. The system is still evolving and may exhibit occasional glitches.

Other guides

Note: This overview reflects the evolving features available in The Sims 4 and related packs. Players can explore these options to craft diverse characters and storylines within the game’s ongoing updates.
