OnceLost Games Teases The Wayward Realms: A Procedurally Generated Fantasy RPG

A small independent studio, OnceLost Games, founded by former Bethesda veterans, has released the first journal detailing the development of an ambitious first‑person fantasy RPG called The Wayward Realms.

The team highlights its focus on procedural generation systems that will shape the game world. These systems are intended to dynamically create landscapes, cities, and intricate dungeons within the open world. As described by the developers, these technologies are currently in pre‑alpha and will continue to evolve as development progresses. The video concludes with a brief snippet of in‑game footage.

The Wayward Realms envisions hundreds of distinct islands populated by thousands of non‑player characters and competing factions. Players will explore cities, dungeons, forests, mountains, swamps, and even the ocean, where they will encounter a diverse array of beings beyond humans, including elves, dwarves, and orcs. The project is being led by Ted Peterson and Julian LeFay, noted for their work on the classic The Elder Scrolls projects TES: Arena and TES 2: Daggerfall.

New concept art for the game was also shared on social media, offering a glimpse into the world and its aesthetic.

The RPG does not yet have a published release window, though it maintains a Steam presence for fans to wishlist and follow updates. The project follows recent releases in the genre, including a first‑person fantasy experience that drew comparisons to the elder scrolls lineage while exploring darker, more mythic themes. A separate trailer and media coverage have highlighted a Slavic folklore influence, featuring a narrative around Baba Yaga that adds to the surrounding mythos.

Notes: this project has generated interest within the role‑playing and indie gaming communities, with attention focused on its ambitious world building and the pedigree of its development team.
