Metro 2033: Legacy Mod Moves from Original Engine to Redux, Expands Open-World Experience
During the AP-PRO Showcase 2022, a teaser trailer premiered for the Metro 2033: Legacy story adaptation, signaling a project of substantial scope comparable to the upcoming game. This marks a notable milestone as the first shooter mod to introduce a fully open-world experience within the genre.
Initially crafted using the engine of the original Metro 2033, development shifted in early 2022 to the Redux version engine. This transition aimed to modernize mechanics, visuals, and performance to match contemporary standards while preserving the mod’s core narrative arc.
For a long period, development relied on a dated iteration of the game engine from 2010. In early 2022, the team began migrating to Redux, a move that necessitated pausing progress and caused a prolonged gap in project updates. The pause allowed for more thorough integration with Redux features and a more stable foundation for future content.
At present, the modification is approximately 60% complete. Three of the seven story chapters have been fully realized, with two distinct endings based on player choices at a pivotal moment in the plot. A day-night cycle has been implemented to enrich the atmosphere, along with a unique in-game menu. Side quests have been added, and new weapons and characters drawn from the Metro book universe broaden the mod’s scope and lore.
There is no official release date announced yet for Metro 2033: Legacy, as the project remains in active development and testing phases. In related news, a separate fan-led effort revived a canceled project, STALKER: Online, which GSC Game World had pursued in 2010. A patch created by fans enables the browser-based experience to run on personal computers, illustrating the enduring passion within the community for classic post-apocalyptic titles. A remaster project under the moniker Shadow Of Chernobyl Update has also shared videos and a wealth of screenshots, highlighting ongoing interest in reimagining these worlds for modern audiences.
