V Rising is an isometric survival game centered on vampires that gained rapid popularity. To use cheats or manage certain game aspects, administrator rights are required, which are held by the server’s creators. This guide explains how to set up a personal V Rising server.

How to choose a dedicated server

There are three ways to run a V Rising dedicated server:

  • Rent a server from GPortal (paid).
  • Set up a server with SteamCMD (free).
  • Set up a server directly within Steam (free).

Rent a server from GPortal

This option suits players who prefer a paid, hassle-free solution. Visit the V Rising section on GPortal, pick a server, or configure a custom setup. The strengths of GPortal are simplicity and solid performance.

Set up a server with SteamCMD

SteamCMD is a popular method for hosting a personal dedicated server. The steps are straightforward:

  1. Download SteamCMD.
  2. Extract the ZIP contents to a new folder and rename it to steamcmd.
  3. Run steamcmd.exe in that folder and wait for the installation to finish.
  4. Open the window and select anonymous login, then press Enter to let SteamCMD fetch data.
  5. In the window that shows App_update 1829350, press Enter. Wait for the server files to load.
  6. When finished, type Exit and press Enter.

Your server files reside in the folder steamappscommonVRisingDedicatedServersteamcmd.

Set up a server from within Steam itself

Another path avoids SteamCMD entirely. Follow these steps:

  1. Open the Steam library and search for V Rising Dedicated Server.
  2. Install the V Rising Dedicated Server tool like any other game.
  3. In the library, access the V Rising Dedicated Server window, choose Manage, then Browse Local Files.

In both methods, a folder containing the server files will be visible. This folder is needed for further configuration.

Configure your server settings

Access the server folder. Right-click the file start_server_example.bat and choose Change. Go to the last line and apply the following changes:

  1. Place the server name in quotes after the phrase server name. This name will appear in the in-game server list.
  2. Set the save name in quotes after -saveName. This name will show up in save files outside the game.
  3. Save the changes and close the file.

Next, locate the folder VRisingServer_DataStreamingAssetsSettings. There are four important files:

  • adminlist.txt — add players who should have administrator access.
  • banlist.txt — specify names of players who cannot join the server.
  • ServerHostSettings.json — edit this file to adjust server settings. Replace Name and SaveName with the server name and the chosen save name. Optionally add a password and a short description. Enter numbers next to Port and QueryPort for future use.
  • ServerGameSettings.json — here are the game configurations to tailor the experience.

List of game settings:

  • Game ModeType: choose PvP or PvE.
  • CanLootEnemyContainers: true allows looting between players.
  • BloodBoundEquipment: true saves all items after death.
  • Clan size: sets the maximum clan capacity.
  • SunDamageModifier: controls sunlight damage; default is 1.
  • CastleDecayRateModifier: sets how quickly the castle heart decays.
  • DayDurationInSeconds: adjusts the day/night cycle length; default is 1080.
  • CastleLimit: defines how many castle hearts a player can own; default is 2.
  • VSPlayerWeekdayTime and VSPlayerWeekendTime: set attack windows for PvP on weekdays and weekends.
  • VSCastleWeekdayTime and VSCastleWeekendTime: set raid windows for PvP on weekdays and weekends.

Starting and stopping the V Rising server

After configuration, start the server by running start_server_example.bat. A black command window will appear, indicating the server is online. To stop it, move the cursor to the window and press Ctrl+C, then confirm with Enter or Yes.

How to Create a Private V Rising Server

For a private game with friends, follow the same setup steps above. Join the server, create a new character, exit, and shut everything down. The process continues with these steps:

  1. Navigate to the saves folder located at save-dataSavesv1[save-name]. Delete all files except SessionId.json.
  2. In Windows Explorer, enter %Appdata%..LocalLowStunlock StudiosVRisingSavesv1 to access saves. Copy the desired saves to the private server folder.
  3. Return to %Appdata%..LocalLowStunlock StudiosVRisingSavesv1 and copy ServerGameSettings.json and ServerHostSettings.json.
  4. Paste these files into the server directory at %Appdata%..LocalLowStunlock StudiosVRisingServer.

After this, start the server and the game. Players can continue from the same progress on a private server.

Set up port forwarding for the V Rising server and configure the firewall

To enable access, port forwarding must be configured using the internal IP address. Start by locating the IP with this method:

  1. Press Start and R, type cmd, and press Enter.
  2. In the command prompt, type ipconfig and press Enter again.
  3. Copy the number shown next to Default Gateway; this is the internal IP address.

Then, in a browser, enter the IP address and configure the Port and QueryPort fields with the values set in ServerHostSettings.json. If needed, IPv4 information can be found in the same location as the IP address.

Firewall passage is essential so others can connect. Follow these steps:

  1. Press Start + R and type wf.msc to open Windows Firewall with Advanced Security.
  2. In Inbound Rules, choose Create Rule. Select Port, TCP Protocol, and enter the two port numbers separated by a comma.
  3. Allow the connection and name the rule, for example V Rising.
  4. Repeat the steps but select UDP Protocol this time.

How to join a private server

  1. Start the game.
  2. Choose Play, then Play Online, Find Servers, and View All Servers and Settings.
  3. Enter the server name in the search bar. If it does not appear, check the right-side filter for proper parameters.
  4. Play the game.

How to Play V Rising Offline

With update 0.5.41448, players can opt for single-player mode. The offline process is as follows:

  1. Open Steam, select Go Offline from the Steam menu, then launch V Rising.
  2. Choose Play, then Private Game, and enable LAN Server before starting the game.

To join a standalone LAN server, use the private server method described earlier, and when connecting, check the LAN Server option before entering the IP address.
