WhatsApp iOS beta introduces picture-in-picture video call, TestFlight testing continues

In the beta release of WhatsApp for iOS, version 22.24.0.79, a picture-in-picture feature for video calls surfaced, according to the WABetaInfo portal.

Reports indicate that this enhancement appeared for a subset of users who installed the app through TestFlight, Apple’s early access program. The update enables a video call to continue while the main chat window remains in a smaller floating frame on the screen. Practically, the call window can be closed, dragged to a different part of the display, or resized to suit the user’s viewing preference.

So far, the testing has been limited to iPhones running the latest iOS 16.1, with no official timetable published for a broader iPhone rollout.

When it comes to Android, WhatsApp has carried picture-in-picture functionality on its Messenger app for several years, underscoring platform-specific differences in feature availability.

Earlier coverage from socialbites.ca suggested that WhatsApp may extend support to tablets in the future.
