Samsung Electronics intends a substantial expansion in its purchase of LG WOLED panels for its televisions this year. The plan calls for acquiring between 700,000 and 800,000 panels, a sharp rise from last year’s 10,000 to 20,000 units, according to GizmoChina, which cites Omdia analysts.
LG Display is targeting roughly 6 million panel shipments this year, with as much as 4 million directed to its own TV lineup. The remaining units are slated for other manufacturers, including Sony and Samsung, with Samsung taking a sizeable share of these. Samsung Display, a leading force in display production, aims to produce around 1.4 million QD-OLED panels this year, keeping about 1.1 million and selling the rest to Sony.
Samsung’s strategy centers on QD-OLED production while relying on its collaboration with LG Display to meet WOLED demand. The company reportedly plans to launch about 2 million OLED TVs this year, doubling last year’s volume.
Analysts forecast total OLED TV shipments will reach approximately 6.3 million units this year. Samsung intends to deploy LG WOLED panels in its B and C series models, while continuing to use its own QD-OLED panels for premium segments.
