A franchise worth its weight
The first half of Capcom’s current fiscal year closed in September, and electronic entertainment companies are now sharing results ahead of shareholder meetings. Capcom is on track for its eleventh straight year of growth, driven largely by its strong franchise strategy. The latest financial report highlights the impact of the fourth numbered installment of the Resident Evil series, released six months ago, which has surpassed 5.4 million units in sales. Other mainline titles continue to perform well, and the document notes a lift in sales for Resident Evil 3 in recent months.
In describing the company’s financial health, the report cites that Resident Evil 2 has surpassed 13 million units in lifetime sales, with 1.2 million copies sold in the first half of the current year. This marks the game as the most profitable entry in the series to date. Delivery of Resident Evil 3 remains strong, with nearly a million copies sold between April and September, bringing its total to around 8 million copies. Across the franchise, more than 150 million copies have been distributed worldwide. Capcom notes that the series began with the original Resident Evil for PlayStation in 1996, setting enduring standards in the survival horror genre that persist to this day. The first half of the fiscal year also shows Capcom moving 22.6 million video game units, compared with 21.3 million in the same period a year earlier. A majority of these sales come from digital markets. Street Fighter 6 led the way, shipping 2.47 million copies since its June launch. The remake of Resident Evil 4, released in the prior fiscal year in March, has sold 1.66 million copies. In total, 5.44 million units were sold in the seven months since the study’s launch. Capcom’s latest lineup includes a new franchise, Exoprimal, which launched on July 14 and attracted just under 940 thousand players by the end of September. The game is cross‑gen and available on both generations of consoles, with Game Pass for PC and consoles contributing to its visibility. While the initial reception took longer to ramp up, the mid‑year results show a positive trajectory for Exoprimal. (Capcom, quarterly report attribution)
