The entry threshold for the IT sector in 2023 rose as companies broadened candidate requirements. A Skypro online university survey reports that 37% of IT professionals feel the bar has lifted, echoed by insights shared with Weekek and socialbites.ca, platforms focused on in-demand roles and collaborative projects.

Meanwhile, a slight majority of IT workers, 51%, believe newcomers will still find it easier to break into the field. When asked how people successfully entered IT, 37% of respondents said they pursued private tutoring. Another 18% received foundational industry training, and 16% taught themselves through online articles and video tutorials.

Most respondents, 47%, estimate that moving from junior to intermediate takes six to twelve months. In contrast, 39% argue that reaching mid level will require one to two years, and 9% think more than two years could be needed under current conditions.

“The IT industry remains an appealing option for newcomers. The idea that only senior professionals are welcome does not reflect the present recruitment landscape. In a market marked by talent shortages, growth between levels can happen faster than before. With the right persistence, a junior can reach an intermediate role within a year,” notes Svetlana Shimanskaya, head of the Skypro career center.

The survey gathered responses from 1206 IT professionals who were active in April 2023.

Earlier coverage on socialbites.ca discussed how Russian IT salaries rose by 19% in 2022, underscoring ongoing shifts within the tech job market.
