In the second quarter of 2023, Russian companies faced a 28% rise in DDoS attacks compared with the same period a year earlier, according to StormWall’s press briefing shared with socialbites.ca.
The public sector bore the heaviest impact, accounting for 37% of all incidents, followed by the financial sector at 23% and telecommunications at 18%. Other sectors also saw noteworthy activity, including energy at 7%, oil at 5%, transportation at 4%, manufacturing at 3%, cultural institutions at 2%, and a small share in other categories.
The most pronounced surge occurred within the public sector, where assaults on government and state institutions jumped 118% in the quarter. The energy sector ranked second with a 74% increase, while oil industry targets grew by 53% to complete the top three in growth during the period.
StormWall analysts noted that May recorded the highest number of DDoS events in the quarter, representing 42% of all incidents reported across Russia during the period.
Industry observers caution that internet fraudsters have begun targeting residential entrances as new vectors for attacks, emphasizing the need for heightened security across both public and private networks.
