Experts point to the rise of expansive bot networks—collections of infected devices with internet access that hackers mobilize for large-scale disruptions—as a key driver behind the growing power of these assaults. In their study, StormWall researchers note that attackers already started deploying more sophisticated DDoS campaigns in 2023, often targeting multiple online assets of a single organization at once. In some cases an assault would strike a company’s website, its network infrastructure, and other connected services simultaneously, amplifying damage and downtime.
Industry experts describe these complex breaches as highly devastating for business continuity. They attribute the escalation to politically motivated adversaries who intensified their activity against Russian firms after the 2022 downturn, initiating aggressive campaigns in early 2023 (StormWall report).
StormWall’s findings also reveal sectoral patterns in the attack landscape for the first quarter. Financial services faced the largest share of incidents, accounting for about 32 percent of all recorded DDoS activity. E-commerce followed with roughly 26 percent, while telecoms represented around 10 percent. Insurance, oil and gas, manufacturing, and education sectors were also prominent targets (StormWall report).
