The first Xbox One models, also known as the FAT or “fat” version, are no longer working due to Microsoft’s lack of updates. About the problem reported Journalists from Digital Foundry cited user complaints.

Problems arise with consoles that have not been updated for a long time. It becomes impossible for users to download new firmware, which leads to the console becoming inoperable due to the inability to connect to Microsoft services.

The journalists checked three consoles, two of which were last updated in 2017 and the third in 2018. Despite trying to update them via USB stick, the system would not boot.

Only older Xbox One models released in 2013 are affected, but not the Xbox One S. Working consoles risk bricking if their settings need to be reset to factory settings.

The exact number of people affected by the issue has not been disclosed, but considering the Xbox One’s wide circulation, we’re talking about millions of users.
