From the moment of their appearance, the game was often seen as something negative in our lives. This was mainly considered a childhood hobby – in the name the word “game” suggests that it is for children, and you can’t claim here. But unlike other traditional games, video games are difficult to develop. On the contrary, modern games often have age -related limitations that are equal or higher than the age of permission. But this is not the purpose of this article.
Games can be addiction. This is one of the most important reasons why many negative negatives relate to this hobby of millions of people. In their eyes, the game is time waste. There is nothing productive in the games, and gamers are often considered “nerds” or losers. Although I don’t even go or refute this opinion, it is worth mentioning that many gamers do not agree with him. They want to prove that games are not a waste of time and that they have their benefits. Recent popular (among gamers?) Studies claim that games can actually be useful for the development of children and adolescents. Let’s look at some examples.
Granic, Lobel & Engels (2014): Advantages of the video game
Magazine American psychologist.
Main conclusions:
- Video games can improve cognitive skills, such as spatial navigation, logic, memory and perception.
- Action games mainly develop attention and ability to solve problems.
- Multipoling and cooperative games contribute to the development of social skills, teamwork and empathy.
- Games often help with emotional regulations and stability, making it a safe space for failures and new attempts.
Green & Bavelier (2003–2007): Studies of the EXHN-Frisse and cognitive skills
Nature and Psychological Science Magazine.
Main conclusions:
- Play a fast action games, such as Call of Duty or Medal of Honor led to improving visual attention and the ability to change attention quickly.
- Gamers did not exceed -Newmers when keeping track of different objects and fast switching of the focus.
These results confirm that games train the ability of the brain to process information quickly and flexibly.

Moreover, many gamers know English relatively well, because almost all games have English voice acting and subtitles. It is easy to deposit in English speech and text, especially if games are not translated into a native language. This often happens when the English speech is accompanied, for example by Russian subtitles. Whether they want it or not, gamers teach passively English, hear the dialogues in English and read subtitles in their native language. Given that medieval topics rule in most RPG and strategies, many gamers are starting to be interested in history and in some cases even politics. The University of Arizona included Age of Empires 4 in its curriculum – and no, this is not a joke. Games are also associated with the development of critical thinking, the ability to resolve problems, multitasking, creativity, as well as with visual motor coordination, stability and perseverance. These studies and their conclusions, together with previous thoughts, have become a real find for gamers – now they had a scientific justification. They could say to their parents and teachers that the games are useful and not reprimand them. But here is a catch – it doesn’t matter how many useful aspects the games have, there is always the best way to develop this or that skill. If you want to learn English, go to the course. Of course you learn more than two years from the game for two months. If you want to develop critical thinking, try to write a well -structured essay or participate in the debate. The best way to solve problems than developing games is to solve crosswords, to analyze mathematical problems or to solve problems in your own life. If you want to improve your multitasking skills, try to cook something good to listen to the podcast while cleaning in the kitchen and covering the table. If you want to improve the planning and strategies, try to plan your week in advance. Soon you will understand that it is much fascinating and complicated than the conquest of enemies or the rescue of the world.
The bottom line is that, no matter how useful some aspects of the games can be, there is always the best way to get these benefits. So what does this lead us to? What is the meaning of all this if we contradict ourselves? Everything is even simple – stop justifying the games. Confess that you are playing because it is funny. You do not play to learn a language or improve problems of problem solving. Just admit that this is a cost of resources that need a lot of hobby time, which still yields small benefits. And this is completely normal. After all, this is Your to live, yours time and Yours Sources. How to spend you – only you decide. You do not have to cover your hobby unless you naturally observe your obligations. Even if you don’t perceive it, it is still much more useful to fulfill obligations than justify them.
In conclusion, don’t pretend that the insignificant benefits of games are the main reason you play. Name a kick and does not embellish. You receive ten times more benefits of other methods ten times less time. Be honest and say courageously: “I play games because I like to do it!”
