The Ruins of Unthe is a hidden location in the expansion. Shadow of the Erdtree for Elden Ring. It’s located in Scadu Altus, but you can find it on the east side of the Shadow Keep. It can be quite tricky to enter the ruins themselves, so in this guide we’ll show you how to do it.

How to get to the ruins of Unte?
To get to the Ruins of Unthe, you’ll need to find a secret chest in the Shadow Fortress. This is the same route you’ll need to take to reach the Abyssal Woods region of the Shadow Realm, so the best place to start is the Place of Mercy Main Gate Square within the Shadow Fortress. She will appear after you defeat the Golden Hippo.
Make your way through the western side of Shadow Keep until you reach an area with rows of flaming boats. To your left is a large staircase leading down to the Shadow Fortress warehouse, but you’ll need to head past it to the eastern side of this area. Take out the militia hiding among the boats here, and once the area is clear you’ll see a corpse with a Silver-Pickled Fowl Foot next to a small staircase.
Go down this staircase and enter the hidden passage behind the waterfall. You will then have to go down another staircase. Below this you will see a small storage room where the painting is kept “Domain of the Dragons”. Hit the illusionary wall to reveal another hidden path.
Continue through the newly opened passage and at the end you will find an ominous stone chest. Interact with this chest to climb inside and begin your journey along the waterfall.
As soon as you come out of the grave, you activate the place of grace Castle watering holeand you will notice that the ruins of Unthe lie right before you.
How do you get to the ruins of Unthe?
At first glance, it may seem like there isn’t much to do in the Unte Ruins, as the entrance is blocked by a large extinct Golem. However, there is a way in, and below we’ll tell you how to get there.
Firstly, on the left side of the ruins (north) is a small ruined building whose walls and red roofs can be climbed. Along the way you will find one Lost Ashes of War and three Smithing Stones.
Once you reach the dead end, you will end up very close to the extinct golem. No matter how hard you try, you won’t be able to climb or jump to get into the ruins.
Instead, you’ll need to throw a Hefty Furnace Pot at the large wicker golem head. You can learn how to make a Great Pot Stove by obtaining Greater Potentate’s Cookbook 2, which can be found in the Traveler’s Rest hut in Gravesite Plain. The nearest Place of Mercy is “Greatbridge, North”so if you don’t have it yet you can fast travel there and find it before you return place of grace “Castle watering hole”.
To make a huge potbelly stove you will need:
- 1x Red meat mushroom;
- 1x Ember from Messmer;
- 1x Oven face.
Fortunately, mushrooms are common in Shadowfell, and the other two ingredients can be found here in the Ruins of Unthe if you don’t have them already. You’ll find three units of Messmer’s Coal on a corpse in the building to the right (south) of the ruins, and there are plenty of furnace hides in the damaged bodies of other dead golems.
If you throw a pot at an extinct golem, it will actually come back to life. You can escape straight into the ruins if you immediately call Torrent, but you can stay and fight the golem.
Be careful: There is another stove golem that will spawn out of the water south of the ruins if you get close to it. If you don’t want to fight two enemies at once, we recommend fighting the one in the water first before reviving the one blocking the entrance. Alternatively, if you don’t want to fight either of them, summon Torrent and run to safety before attempting to run past the golem into the ruins.
Once inside the ruins you will need to collect two items. You can get the stone-wrapped sword from the marked grave on the right, and the Giant Golden Arc spell from the chapel in the treasure chest.
Don’t forget to take this before you leave Revered Spirit Ash just past the ruins (there’s a broken wall at the back) you’ll find behind the rocks to the east.
To increase the distance between you and these creatures, continue south and activate the Grace Place “Hermit River Upstream”.
