Head of development for the recently released God of War: Ragnarok Eric Williams (Eric Williams) shared in an interview with IGN which games have had the greatest influence on him in the past.

The developer listed five old-school games released on the NES:
- The Legend of Zelda. “Being from the Midwest and spending a lot of time in the woods as a kid, this game felt so familiar and fantastic at the same time.”— Erik Williams.
- Castlevania 2: Simon’s Quest – according to the developer, in this game he mainly remembers the mythology of monsters, secrets and the change of time of day;
- Mike Tyson’s punch out!! – In this game, the developer loved the battle system. “The patterns, mechanics, techniques and complexity of this game formed the basis of all my early ideas about what a ‘good’ combat system should be”he said during an interview.
- baseball star- “I like numbers in baseball and this game had a salary system that taught me the basics of statistics and economics”– said the developer.
- river city ransom “Playground gangs, sports, weapons, skill strips felt very relevant at the time.”— said Eric Williams, commenting on the game.
