East Friday, June 24 hits the theaters with In the Sublime, a new comedy featuring Carmen Machi in the lead role. The film is directed by Roberto Bueso, known for Group, and draws inspiration from a true story surrounding the former Real Madrid star Valdo and his sister Marina, brought to life by Machi herself.
In this tale, a nun becomes a central figure as a substitute teacher who guides a group of orphaned children from a boarding school that spends the summer away from family members on a vacation of their own making.
He decides to work a little harder so these kids have more fun, more work, and more activities to do. He believes in that. The plan is to showcase the power of sport, specifically football, as a catalyst for growth. Machi explains in an interview with Europa Press that she recalls the moment when her sister Marina had already become a legend, a coaching nun who inspired many.
Marina is depicted as a nun from the 1990s who helped propel the career of another real character, football player Valdo, who rose to prominence in the premier league and even dedicated a goal to his sister Marina, according to Machi.
The film follows Marina, a remarkably unconventional nun. A school that arrived at El Parral in the summer of 1994 faces the threat of closing. Yet, despite the families’ laughter at the trainees, Marina has a bold idea that could alter everything: she starts a football team.
Two nuns, Innocent and gentle Angelines, along with the spirited and kind Tatiana, join to form a true family unit. Years later, Valdo—one of the boys portrayed by Dairon Tallón—makes his debut with Real Madrid’s first team, achieving success as a professional player in the major leagues. The ensemble is completed by Machi alongside cast members Paula Usero, Paul Chiapella, Nuria González, Anise Doroftei, and Manolo Solo.
As the narrative unfolds, the film explores how a community can rally around a shared dream. It highlights how resilience, mentorship, and the simple joy of teamwork can reshape a room full of strangers into a supportive circle. The characters navigate challenges, celebrate small victories, and learn that family can be built from trust, humor, and a common goal. The setting, a summer that becomes a turning point, acts as a backdrop for testing loyalties, forging friendships, and proving that belief in others can spark outstanding achievements. The story blends humor with heartfelt moments to portray a community that refuses to give up on its most vulnerable members. The ultimate message is clear: with guidance, opportunity, and heart, young people can unlock potential they never imagined. The cast delivers performances that balance warmth and wit, keeping the tone light while never losing sight of the film’s emotional core. This combination offers audiences a genuine, uplifting portrayal of mentorship, ambition, and the enduring power of sport. Attribution: production notes and interviews with cast and crew.
