Formative pruning of trees and shrubs should be done within a period determined separately for each plant type. Landscape architect and Greenworks ambassador to Russia Ilya Vasetsky told socialbites.ca.
As the expert explains, garden trees need pruning.
“The duration of the decorative effect largely depends on correct pruning, regardless of the life form of the plants. In other words, whether it is a tree, shrub, vine or herbaceous perennial, everything requires competent and systematic pruning,” said Vasetsky.
He noted that there are different types of pruning – sanitary and molding, for example.
“Sanitary pruning is done when necessary during the spring season. We remove broken, unproductive, potentially unwanted, disease and pest infested branches. This procedure is combined with shaping pruning in mid-spring to give the plant a ball shape with proper care,” said the landscape architect.
He added that formative pruning is done in the spring, although not on all plants.
“You can prune any plant before the buds open, except birches, hazelnuts, grapes – these species will begin to “cry” in the spring. It is not recommended to touch the bushes blooming in spring. For example, forsythia, lilac, mock orange (popularly known as jasmine), magnolia, rhododendrons and almonds should be pruned after the shrubs bloom,” Vasetsky warned.
He also noted that pine, spruce and juniper trees should be pruned in early June.
“Young light green growths will help determine when the time is right. If there is a need to restrict the growth of plants, then the growths can be safely bent or cut by 1/3 of the length of the young shoot to give shape, but the growth of the coniferous plant is maintained,” said the landscape architect.
