Singer Zemfira, who has been labeled a foreign agent by Russia’s authorities, has filed a complaint challenging the court order that refused to revoke her foreign agent status. Reports indicate the development was initially provided by TASS.
The foreign agent designation was attached to Zemfira in February 2023. The Ministry of Justice has stated the move reflected the artist’s public support for Ukraine, her performances in nations considered unfriendly by Moscow, and alleged financial backing from sources outside Russia.
In statements to RIA Novosti, Zemfira’s lawyer, Alexander Peredruk, indicated that the singer came under suspicion for receiving funds from financial institutions described as Irish and German in origin.
Following the designation, Zemfira pursued a legal challenge to overturn the foreign agent status. The Moscow Zamoskvoretsky Court, however, rejected her claim, upholding the original order.
After the court’s decision, Zemfira proceeded to respond to the Ministry of Justice’s allegations, which had linked her to alleged funding from Irish organizations.
