Exclusive works converge in a fresh exhibition that gathers eleven distinct artists. From the Valencian Community’s Consortium of Museums, there is a clear call for expressive power that blends both abstract and figurative approaches, delivering a sense of absolute contemporaneity that resonates with audiences across Canada and the United States.

Currently, the exhibition welcomes the public with a lineup that includes Alejandro Casanova, Ana Sansano, Carolina Ferrer, Chema López, Concha Ros, Dimas La, Eduardo Infante, Jesús Herrera, Juan Olivares, Mª Dolores Mulà, and Perceval Graells. It is organized and produced by the Consortium of Museums in partnership with the City Council of Guardamar del Segura, aligned with the cultural enthusiasm of the Valencian Capital of Culture—an honor that underscores regional commitment to modern art.

Guardamar del Segura stands at the forefront of this initiative, a place where the landscape, history, and contemporary practice intersect. The exhibition was presented by the Museum Consortium Director José Luis Pérez Pont, alongside the mayor, José Luis Sáez Priest, and a Member of the local Cultural Council, Pilar Gay. The event aims to showcase a collection that began in 2017, expanding its reach beyond the three provincial capitals to reveal artworks that reflect diverse perspectives across the autonomous region.

“Our focus differed at the outset, prioritizing a strong set of works of art and ceramics,” notes Pérez Pont. “This time, a careful selection of painting is brought together once again, highlighting a broad range of artists, techniques, themes, and styles. The collection represents a vibrant expression of Valencian contemporary art and contributes to a richer cultural narrative.”

Six years of the collection

The Contemporary Art Collection of the Generalitat Valenciana began its life in 2017, with a clear goal: broaden the reach of regional art and revitalize the local art economy. The exhibition brings together pieces that offer a panorama of current Valencian contemporary art and serve as a lasting cultural heritage for future generations.

Since its inception, the Generalitat has acquired more than a hundred works, establishing a balance that features both male and female artists. The acquisitions address pressing social themes, prompt reflection, and help create a shared memory. The program of exhibitions has unfolded throughout the autonomous region, ensuring that audiences far from the provincial capitals can engage with these important works.

Between September 2023 and February 2024, Guardamar del Segura hosts three exhibitions. Each one selects works according to distinct criteria and always involves artists from the three respective provinces, enriching the regional art dialogue and inviting local communities to explore contemporary approaches close to their daily lives.

Notes from the curator reveal a deliberate shift toward painting within the collection, while maintaining a diverse fabric of artists and media. The aim remains to present a robust cross-section of contemporary expression—works that challenge, inspire, and converse with visitors as they move through space and time in this coastal city.

Marking six years of ongoing collecting, the initiative demonstrates a sustained commitment to strengthening the regional arts ecosystem. The showcased pieces reflect a dynamic moment in Valencian art, balancing tradition with experimentation and inviting global audiences to participate in a regional dialogue that remains deeply connected to broader contemporary currents.

As the program continues, Guardamar del Segura is positioned as a cultural crossroads where exhibitions travel beyond provincial lines, inviting families, students, and seasoned collectors alike to engage with thoughtful, provocative imagery that speaks to local and international viewers alike.
