The cast brings together Anna Ardova, Alexei Serebryakov, Nino Ninidze, Dmitry Chebotarev, and Valery Stepanov in principal roles. The narrative follows surgeon Lika Bulatova, played by Ardova, who discovers that her son Vasily has vanished while vacationing abroad in Greece. Investigators propose that Vasily may have become involved with militant groups abroad, but Lika remains convinced that he has been abducted. In her search for answers, Vasily’s biological father, Vasily Pavel, portrayed by Serebryakov, becomes a key ally. The two parents push beyond borders to find their son and uncover the truth behind his disappearance.
The filmmaker explains that the project required crafting a world distinctly separate from everyday life to illuminate the challenging dynamics of bridging two cultures. The portrayal also emphasizes the formidable inner strength of a Russian woman who shows empathy, determination, and an unwavering will to persevere, even in the face of daunting circumstances. The creative director notes that this emotional core drives the story and shapes how the characters respond to adversity.
Nikolai Khomeriki directs the piece. He has collaborated with KION before, including work on a prior series. Khomeriki is also known for feature films such as 977 and A Tale of Darkness, which gained recognition at international festivals. The cinematographer’s recent project, Once Upon a Time in Anxiety, received accolades at a prominent regional festival, underscoring a track record of acclaimed work across different formats and events.
