This Portalet Palace LAB-15 takes the spotlight in the session of the cycle “Heritage. Art by Value” organized by the Alicante Cultural Institute Juan Gil-Albert in Alicante’s historic center. Until this eighteenth-century building, the institute’s activities will move. This Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., visitors can discover, on site, the facilities and features from the hands of architect Angel Rocamora, who participated in the latest rehabilitation and musealization works of the palace; architect Santiago Varela, an expert on the building’s history; and Gaspar Major, the manager of the Alicante Municipal Housing Board, who will be present at the event.
Located on the corner of Calle Labradores, this eighteenth-century historic building carries its name from the old street Nasturtium portal, which gave rise to the monastery of the same name—now Santo Tomás—and which is no longer present.
Today, the Palace bears the marks of numerous refurbishments carried out by its owners over three centuries, including the latest rehabilitation that preserves the building in all its glory. Among other actions, three rooms have been museumized: on the ground floor, a Translation Center; a mezzanine that houses the Romanillos-Harris Spanish Guitar Collection; and the last room dedicated to the exhibition “Monumental Alicante from Vila Nova to Vila Vella.”
Julia Parra, First Vice President and Vice President for Culture, noted, “This visit will offer a clearer understanding of a symbolic building in Alicante’s heritage, guided by distinguished experts who will lead a tour that reveals little-known yet fascinating aspects of Portalet Palace’s features, evolution, and history.”
