Alicante Museums Unite Under Musea for Shared Goals

In 2013, the city of Aliante hosted International Museum Day with coordinated activities that brought together multiple cultural institutions. Beginning in 2015, the same collaborative spirit extended to Noche en Blanco. Now, eighteen years of cooperative work culminates in a formal alliance named Musea. The agreement aims to jointly manage outreach, education, and research across art, history, culture, and heritage, helping visitors better understand Alicante’s city and culture while expanding access to its rich cultural offerings.

The accord involves the Town Hall of Alicante, the State Assembly, the University of Alicante, Aguas de Alicante, and Ocean Race. It is set to receive approval from the governing board and will be signed by all participating parties.

Musea encompasses a range of museums and cultural centers, including MACA, MARQ, Mubag, MUA, Museo de Aguas, the Ocean Race Museum, Nueva Tabarca Museum, La Cigarreras, the Juan Gil-Albert Institute, and the historic Lonja showroom.

Valid for Four Years

The core aim of the agreement is a four-year term during which the involved institutions will jointly design and execute activities across Alicante’s museums and cultural centers. This collaborative framework ensures that all agencies involved in the city’s cultural dissemination and tourism can view content about art, history, culture, and heritage through a single, cohesive channel.

Celebrations of the International Day of Museums and related events at MARQ exemplify how the network consolidates resources to broaden reach and impact. The arrangement positions the city’s cultural landscape as a unified, accessible offering for residents and visitors alike.

The relationship serves as a central coordinating tool, mapping the museums and cultural centers of Alicante into one integrated environment. It enables members to address issues in a coherent, coordinated fashion, aligning exhibition programs with event schedules. This approach also enhances visitors’ understanding of Alicante’s city and culture while expanding access to its cultural offerings.

Under the plan, museum activities and content will be organized on a dedicated web page. A mixed commission will oversee development, coordination, oversight, and monitoring, with commitments reviewed quarterly.

The presidency of this committee will rotate annually by calendar year and alphabetically, ensuring that the first year designates La Cigarreras as the starting point for the cycle.

The collaboration aims to improve coordination of cultural actions within Alicante, addressing a long-standing need to deliver a more complete program across units and achieve greater resonance through joint initiatives. This approach reduces the risk of counterprogramming and strengthens the city’s cultural impact.
