After years away from the spotlight, Fran Perea returned to the road in 2018, and his journey has kept moving ever since. He kept enriching his interpretation projects for television, cinema, and theater, culminating in the 2020 release of the album Canciones para salvarme. Concerts continued, and the track record grew. By 2023, two decades had passed since his debut album, with The Girl Next Door marking a defining moment and the drama Los Serrano solidifying his fame across the country. This anniversary deserved a high-profile celebration, and Perea has been quietly crafting a project he has dubbed one plus one twenty. He remains committed to other artistic pursuits, with plans continuing to unfold as he nears new musical conclusions. Returning to Murcia, he joined forces with actor and writer Pablo Piñeiro for a collaborative show that features a blend of classics and a distinctly educational hybrid performance, as he explained.

First of all: What is one plus one equals twenty?

It is a self-produced music project he created with Víctor Elías. They intend to celebrate twenty years in music since Perea released his first album, while also commemorating the twentieth anniversary of The Girl Next Door and the Los Serrano soundtrack. They are revisiting tracks from the second album Punto y aparte (2005) and adding collaborations on representative songs that defined an era.

Currently Ana Guerra, Pignoise, La Oreja de Van Gogh are all collaborators in the project. Are these partnerships finalized?

Nearly all are in place. The team is content with the ensemble and the contributing artists. In the near term, they will complete the final collaboration and finalize the recording of the songs. Time will tell how far the project will travel, but the focus remains. Let’s not drift too far into the past…

He hints on Instagram by releasing snippets as doors; when does the fourth door open?

The fourth door opens now, on November 25, with the track Qué va a ser, a collaboration with La Oreja de Van Gogh. The song was composed by Xabi San Martín, the keyboardist from the Donostia band. The presence of this group adds a notable value to the album, and Perea is visibly excited about the partnership.

Will the Los Serrano cast join for a twentieth anniversary reunion in 2023?

There is genuine interest from the cast. They have followed Perea and Víctor’s work closely and have shown willingness to participate from the start. Whether the production company or chain will join remains undecided, but some form of collaboration is expected.

How have listeners responded to the songs released so far?

The response has been very positive. The project is among Perea’s most ambitious musical endeavors in recent years and is drawing strong attention. Audiences have embraced the tracks, and social networks reflect a warm reception. Fans recall these songs as defining moments of a certain era, and the material is being celebrated for its impact on listeners and venues alike.

Two decades, one plus one equals twenty—does that keep him motivated, or does it wear on him after all these years?

Though he stepped back from music briefly, the composition has remained part of his repertoire since his return in 2018. He continues to value the song and the connection it creates with audiences. In a Fran Perea concert, fans expect to hear one plus one equals seven, and he keeps that promise with a renewed sense of pride and affection.

Beyond this project, another collaboration with writer Pablo Piñeiro emerged. What do they share about the show The Between Us, presented this Thursday in the Music Room? What does it offer?

The collaboration arose by chance after Piñeiro published his book The Positive Side of Failing in Love (2020). Rather than a simple talk, they crafted a show where a couple discusses the themes from the book and pairs them with songs from Perea’s repertoire that relate to emotional relationships. The aim is to explore how relationships are navigated, how insecurities are confronted, and how cultural models—sometimes outdated—shape how people connect. It becomes a didactic, life-affirming performance about relationships.

And is there another project on the horizon?

Yes. The second season of Kosta, a noir television series shot on the Costa del Sol, is expected to premiere on the Orange platform soon. Filming continues on Joaquín Mazón’s De perdidos al río. He is also involved in a theatrical run of Harold Pinter’s Come Home, directed by Daniel Veronese. That covers what is current, with more to come, but there is no shortage of plans.
